Complete COSM 100 with C or better within two years; selection is by lottery. Catalog sections give differing supply estimates, so request a current itemized kit price and next cohort availability.
The catalog gives approximately monthly starts and both campus and hybrid manicure curricula. Ask for the next cohort date, campus days and any required distance-education hours.
January 19, 2027 registration is open. Campus hours: Tuesday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Saturday, 8:15 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Four remote independent-study hours are required during the freshman phase.
The Vacaville course exceeds California's 400-hour minimum. Its 2026 start calendar lists November 23 and November 25 by schedule; compare the commute and confirm the cohort with admissions.
To qualify for the manicurist examination, you must be at least 17 and have finished 10th grade or its equivalent. Read the Board's license requirements before comparing school admissions policies.
2
Verify the school and course
Match your campus to the California Board's school list. Ask for the complete nail course name, since a short nail art workshop may not meet the licensing curriculum.
3
Complete the nail training
Finish at least 400 hours and the required curriculum at an approved school. The Board FAQ says you cannot take the examination before finishing the required training; some local programs require more hours.
4
Apply and arrange testing
Submit your examination application and training documentation as directed by the Board. After approval, schedule the PSI written examination and study the current candidate information.
5
Check the issued license
After passing the test, confirm that your manicurist license has been issued before providing paid nail services. The Board's training answers explain that finishing school alone does not allow you to work for a fee.
Nail technician wages in the Sacramento metro
The latest BLS OEWS Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom, CA table reports 3,130 manicurist and pedicurist jobs and a median annual wage of $35,340 for May 2025. Select occupation 39-5092 in the area table. This estimate covers the metro workforce, including workers at different experience levels; it is not a starting-pay offer.
BLS explains that OEWS does not count self-employed workers. Your own nail business therefore needs a separate budget for supplies, space and other expenses. When comparing salon positions, request details about base pay, commission, tips, paid hours and who supplies the products.
Published nail course costs and funding
Citrus Heights Beauty College publishes $2,056 in tuition and $3,875.75 in total charges in its 2025-2026 catalog. MIXED's 2026 catalog lists $2,852 tuition and $4,182 in estimated program charges. At Sacramento City College, resident tuition is $46 per unit, with required materials and other fees charged separately.
Ask the financial aid office whether your exact nail course is eligible before filing the FAFSA or planning around Pell grants. Citrus Heights explains its aid process. Veterans can ask about course coverage under the GI Bill; Federico publishes benefit instructions. For WIOA assistance, start with a Sacramento Works coach, who checks eligibility before you choose a listed training program. Compare grants, payment plans and any employer contribution in writing.
Do I need a California license to work as a nail technician?
California uses the title manicurist for the nail care license. The school route requires approved training followed by the written examination and license issuance. A course completion certificate does not replace that license. Read the Board's licensing qualifications and ask the campus how it documents the required nail training when you apply for the examination.
Why do local nail programs have different lengths?
California sets a 400-hour minimum, but schools can offer longer courses and different weekly schedules. Sacramento City College describes 500 hours and a 14.5-unit certificate. Milan's Vacaville catalog lists a 600-hour Manicurist course. Check the hours in your enrollment agreement as well as the advertised month count so you can compare attendance commitments.
How do I enter Sacramento City College's nail certificate?
The college's current catalog requires COSM 100 with a grade of C or better before the nail technology courses. It lists selection by lottery on the last day of that introductory class. Complete the prerequisite within two years, then ask the department about the next available cohort, permission to register and the current kit purchase requirements.
What services does a manicurist license cover?
The Board's manicurist scope flyer includes manicures, pedicures, nail repairs and artificial nail services. It also identifies prohibited procedures, including treating nail fungus and ingrown toenails. Use that list when asking about the curriculum, particularly advanced pedicure techniques. Training in a procedure does not by itself place that procedure within your license's allowed services.
