The August 1, 2026 catalog lists this certificate separately from the A.S. degree and the Mechanical Systems Technician certificate; safety glasses are required.

2
Confirm admission and lab dates
Ask about the next start and every required campus visit. InterCoast's Rancho Cordova campus combines online coursework with local labs; UTI Sacramento publishes HVACR start dates for November 2026 and January 2027.
3
Prepare for refrigerant certification
EPA Section 608 rules require certification for covered refrigerant service tasks. Select Type I, II, III or Universal testing for the equipment you expect to handle; closely and continually supervised apprentices have an exception.
4
Arrange an approved exam
Use an EPA-listed certifying organization to take the required test. EPA approves test providers and does not approve preparatory HVAC classes, so ask the school who administers its exam and whether testing costs extra.
5
Separate employment from contracting
California's C-20 contractor classification covers warm-air heating, ventilation and air-conditioning contracting. CSLB's licensing guidance describes an exemption for qualifying wage-paid employees; opening a contracting business requires a separate review of contractor licensing rules.
Sacramento HVAC employment and median pay
BLS May 2025 OEWS metro data reported 2,940 heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers (SOC 49-9021) in the Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom, CA metro area. The median wage was $32.06 per hour and $66,670 per year. The linked BLS table covers the Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom metropolitan area.
These are regional wage estimates across workers at different experience levels. They are not a starting-pay quote for a new graduate. BLS survey guidance distinguishes employment estimates from job openings. Compare actual offers by hourly rate, weekly hours, overtime, benefits and required travel.
Published HVAC tuition and funding options
SCC's 2026-27 fee table lists $46 per unit for residents. NCE's 2026 catalog lists $17,175 HVAC tuition and $17,485 total charges. UTI's Sacramento catalog lists $25,300 tuition and a $26,665 estimated total for enrollment from August 1, 2026. Request a bill that separates books, tools and EPA testing.
Local formats differ. NCE publishes 840 hours in as few as 10.5 months, while UTI's Sacramento catalog lists 39 weeks and 975 hours. Local 447 describes a five-year apprenticeship combining employment and classroom instruction. Ask each provider for the calendar that includes holidays, lab meetings and any extra time needed to retake a course.
Does finishing HVAC classes give me EPA 608 certification?
You must pass the required test through an EPA-approved certifying organization. Completing a class alone does not replace that exam. EPA's requirements describe Type I, Type II, Type III and Universal credentials, which do not expire. Ask the provider which test it offers, who gives it and whether both the exam fee and retest fee are included.
Do I need a California contractor license to work as an HVAC employee?
CSLB describes an exemption for a wage-paid employee who meets its conditions, including limits on independent business activity and control of the work. Running your own HVAC contracting business is a separate matter, with C-20 covering warm-air HVAC work. Covered refrigerant service also falls under EPA Section 608. Check the requirements for your actual duties and employment arrangement.
Can I take HVAC training online while living in Sacramento?
You can compare hybrid programs with nearby lab access. InterCoast lists online coursework with hands-on labs in Rancho Cordova, and UEI's Sacramento HVAC page lists a hybrid format. Ask how many campus visits each module needs and whether lab times can change. Travel to required labs should be part of your weekly plan before you choose a class.
How do I apply for the Local 447 HVAC apprenticeship?
The official entrance exam page lists December 7-11, 2026 testing, with appointment requests opening November 15. Applicants must be at least 18 and bring the required education and photo identification documents. After you pass, the committee gives you a signatory-employer list, and you must find your first job. Passing the entrance exam does not provide placement.
